The Dugout · Fielding
Where is the play breaking down?
Start with the play you keep seeing. The Dugout will help you find which part of it is breaking down, what to work on, and when to let the athlete play.
Troubleshoot
Fix the play you keep seeing.
The miss usually isn't where it shows up. Before you add another drill, find the part of the play that actually breaks down.
Booting Routine Ground Balls
The ball is hit right at him and it still gets away. Most of the time the error started several steps earlier — in the approach, the hop or the feet that never gave the hands a chance.

Develop
Build the feet behind every play.
Footwork isn't one skill. It's a sequence — and each stage sets up the next one. Build them in the order the play happens.
Get Ready
A balanced, light position and a little rhythm, so the fielder is already moving when the ball is hit.
The Last Two Steps
Arrive under control and on time instead of charging in and stopping dead at the ball.
Create the Hop
Use pace and angle to field a good hop instead of letting the ball choose the in-between one.
Receive the Ball
Glove out front, working through the ball, in a position that's ready to throw — not just safe.
Transfer & Throw
Finish the footwork: a quick exchange and feet that line the body up to the target.
Field on the Move
Range, angles and throws from different platforms when the play won't wait for a perfect setup.
Patterns are how you build the feet. Athleticism is what you build them for.
Know the job
Take the feet to a position.
Good feet travel. But every position asks something different — different angles, different throws and a different job before the ball is ever hit.
Middle Infield
Angles, range, feeds and turning two around the bag.
Third Base
Reaction, bunt coverage and throws from changing angles.
First Base
Footwork at the bag, picks and knowing when to come off it.
Outfield
First step, routes, communication and throwing to the right base.
The Dugout principle
The best defenders know where they're going before the ball is hit. The feet just get them there.

The Youth Infielder's Footwork Progression
"Work on your footwork" isn't coaching. It's a category. Break the play into stages, find the one that breaks down, and build from there.
