The Dugout · Hitting

What's happening at the plate?

Start with what you're seeing. The Dugout will help you understand what may be causing it, what to try, and when to leave it alone.

Start with the problem

Troubleshoot

Fix the problem you keep seeing.

Start with the symptom. Before changing a young hitter's swing, understand what may actually be causing it—and whether it needs fixing at all.

Dropping the Hands

Hands dump early. The barrel loops. The hitter gets trapped underneath the baseball or has to recover just to reach it. But hands moving down doesn't automatically mean something is wrong.

Diagnose Dropping Hands

More problems The Dugout is tracking

Rolling Over The barrel exits useful contact too early.
Lunging The hitter leaks forward and loses adjustability.
Pulling Off The front side leaves the pitch before the barrel gets there.
Casting The barrel takes a long route to the baseball.
Timing The swing works—but not at the right moment.

Develop

Build the movements behind a better swing.

Not everything starts with a problem. Build the connected movements that help a hitter create timing, direction, adjustability and power.

01

Load & Coil

Gather energy while staying athletic, balanced and ready to move when the pitch demands it.

02

Lower Half

Learn how the ground, legs and hips support the swing without turning movement into a mechanical checklist.

03

Sequencing

Connect the body's movements so energy travels efficiently into the barrel instead of fighting against it.

04

Barrel Path

Build a path that gets the barrel into a useful hitting zone and keeps it there through contact.

05

Staying Inside

Understand what this common cue is actually trying to create and how it affects direction and adjustability.

06

Contact & Extension

Train strong, adjustable contact and learn to stay through the baseball instead of chasing one perfect position.

The goal isn't to build one “correct” swing. It's to help the hitter create a repeatable swing that can adjust to different pitches.

Compete

Take the swing into the batter's box.

Mechanics matter. So do timing, decisions and the ability to compete pitch to pitch. A good swing only helps if the hitter can use it against a pitcher.

01

Time the Pitcher

Learn to move with the pitcher so the swing doesn't begin with a rushed reaction after the ball is already on its way.

02

Hunt a Pitch

Go to the plate with an idea of what you can drive instead of treating every strike like the same pitch.

03

Adjust

Different speeds and locations demand different solutions. The hitter's job is to preserve the ability to adjust.

04

Next Pitch

A bad swing, a called strike or a missed opportunity is over. Reset quickly enough to compete on the pitch that comes next.

The Dugout principle

Don't build a beautiful practice swing that disappears when a pitcher, count and consequence show up.
